London Riots 2011

How does the BBC's news coverage of events surrounding the London Riots on the 8th August 2011 potentially affect the collective identity of young people in a negative manner?

The image of young people is negatively effected by their constant association with the London Riots throughout the news report. The report fails to mention any viewpoints or opinions from youths, the majority of interviews being with middle-class, white citizens - This straight away reinforces a cynical perspective of teenagers as older generations have a prejudice view on youths which they have now conveyed to the many watching the report. The only voice of a teenager that we are allowed to here, is of a young boy who uses slang words, terms that are associated with youths. Moreover, he says 'Lets steal them watches' which, due to mediation, portrays the message that the youths were the only ones to blame, however, only 26% of the incidents that occurred during the London Riots were due to youths.
